Erosion Mitigation and Archaeological Data Recovery, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay

PCSI archaeologists recently completed the last in a series of projects designed to evaluate and protect cultural resources in shoreline areas of Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH), Kaneohe Bay that were experiencing severe erosion. Initially, a Research Design was prepared for the project, containing extensive background research, research questions to guide the archaeological studies, an Archaeological Monitoring Plan, a Data Recovery Plan, and a Burial Treatment Plan.

PCSI archaeologists then conducted a testing program containing 25 test units along eroding beach areas to evaluate the occurrence of subsurface cultural deposits. Later, in the wake of a severe storm that uncovered a human burial along one stretch of beach, PCSI provided emergency support to recover the remains for repatriation.

In the final fieldwork phase of the project, PCSI archaeologists conducted extensive data recovery excavations covering approximately 18 square meters in an area determined to have a high probability of containing significant cultural resources. Large quantities of cultural materials were recovered for laboratory analysis and interpretation in PCSI’s Archaeology Laboratory. Several burials also were encountered during the excavations. These were dealt with in accordance with our approved Burial Treatment Plan.

The final project report brought together three years of investigative and emergency recovery work at the site. Work performed by PCSI, as well as the University of Hawaii and other Army Corps contractors, was exhaustively documented for the client by PCSI.
