PCSI is providing archaeological and cultural resource services to the City and County of Honolulu, Department of Design and Construction, in the planning and development of the Waianae Regional Park. The archaeological studies are a critical component of the master planning process for developing a new park to serve the local community.

PCSI was responsible for the inventory survey of the undeveloped 20-acre parcel. Our archaeologists surveyed, mapped, and recorded significant archaeological sites and features in the park area. Test excavations were conducted to recover samples of cultural deposits that were evaluated in PCSI’s iHonolulu Archaeology Laboratory. |
Global Positioning System (GPS) tools also were used to map critical sites and features at the park, ncluding approximately 80 sinkholes.PCSI also prepared a Burial Treatment Plan for human burials located at the regional park property.
As part of its services for the City and County, PCSI staff coordinated consultation between the City and County personnel, State Historic Preservation staff, Native Hawaiian leaders, and local community members. The consultation process was used to identify important cultural resources and sites, as well as development issues related to the Waianae Regional Park property. The success of PCSI’s consultation work proved critical to completing the study. |
