PCSI provided archeological services during an Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) reconnaissance survey of 1,000 acres in the Hawaii Army National Guard (HIARNG) Kanaio Training Area on the island of Maui. Initially, PCSI assisted in preparing portions of the UXO survey work plan dealing with documentation and location of cultural resources.
 |
During the field portion of the project, PCSI archaeologists accompanied the UXO survey team, documenting cultural resources encountered, and ensuring that the resources were not affected by the survey and detonation activities. Global Positioning Systems (GPS) was be used to accurately locate and map all cultural resources encountered during the 12-week field program. |
After completing field work, PCSI prepared portions of the survey report dealing with cultural resource protection issues. The survey report identified several previously unrecorded cultural features and, through the use of GPS technology, also provided improved location information for previously recorded sites.
